For grad students: Mentoring meetings available at ASA Denver

6/16/2012

Hello grad student members of the ASA Labor and Labor Movements Section,

Past Chair Carolina Bank Muñoz initiated a program of mentoring meetings for grad student members at the ASA meetings, and we judged it a success, so we’ll be doing it again this year.  It’s pretty informal: we put you in touch with someone more senior scholar who seems like a helpful connection, and then the two of you arrange to meet for coffee or lunch at the meetings.

Just let me know by return email the following things:
1) Name and email
2) Research topic or area of interest
3) Methodology(ies) in which you are most interested
4) Any specific ideas for scholars you might like to meet (we will only put you in touch with one, but feel free to suggest more than one)

I’m traveling, so you will get my autoreply, but my committee and I will do our best to get you matched up.

Best,
Chris

Job: Open, emphasis on race and ethnicity, social psychological approach-New College of Florida

6/16/2012

Assistant Professor in Sociology

New College of Florida, a small residential, highly selective liberal arts college, invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship beginning in August 2013. PhD expected by that time. Candidates should be able to demonstrate excellence, or potential for excellence, in teaching. Preference will be given to candidates whose teaching and research interests complement and enhance our existing strengths. We are especially interested in candidates with substantial expertise on race and ethnicity and whose research and teaching employs a social psychological perspective, broadly defined.

New College is committed to excellence in teaching and research, and encourages collaborative student-faculty scholarship. Students are intellectually independent and research-oriented. Teaching load is two courses per semester, plus individualized tutorials and supervision of senior thesis projects. Interested candidates should send a letter of application, Curriculum Vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy and research interests, transcripts, and three letters of recommendation to David Brain, New College of Florida, 5800 Bay Shore Drive, Sarasota, FL 34243-2197. Screening of applicants will begin October 1, 2013, and will continue until the position is filled. Individuals with the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college’s continuing commitment to cultural and gender diversity, pluralism and individual difference are encouraged to apply. Consistent with law and New College’s respect for personal dignity, the college does not discriminate between applicants for employment based on race, nationality, religion, age, disability, gender expression, gender identity, veteran status, marital status, or sexual orientation. According to Florida law, applications and meetings regarding applications are open to the public. Applicants who need a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in the selection process must notify the College five days in advance.

Job opening: IRLE Program and Development Director position

6/16/2012

Hi Labor and Labor Movements section,

We’re looking for a Ph.D. to fill this job.  It’s on a one-year contract basis, but we expect the job will be continuing.  We’re trying to hire this summer.

Thanks,
Chris
------------

The UCLA Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) is seeking to hire a Program and Development Director.  The role is to help shape and define the IRLE research agenda, identify funding sources, help mobilize relevant faculty and grad students, lead a process of grant and contract writing, and participate in research and dissemination of that research.  Although there is a research component which can and should include pursuing the Program and Development Director’s own research interests, the bulk of the job consists of a more institution-building role, helping to draw in and organize others around externally funded research.  One goal within this is to develop projects that bridge between more academic research based in IRLE’s Academic Unit, and more applied research and programs, especially those based in the Labor Center.  This institution-building role is potentially quite exciting, in that it involves helping to lead the development of an expanded research agenda.  The position would report directly to the IRLE Director, Chris Tilly.  A copy of the job description is attached.  IRLE’s goal is to fill this job over the summer.
